waist twist = punching power
by: jaywhite

I can confirm that punching power comes mainly from the amount of waist twist or "turning into the punch". How do I know? A fighter who fought Antonio Cervantes for the world lightweight title, beat world champion Saoul Mamby twice, and fought Esteban DeJesus, the only fighter to beat Roberto Duran as a lightweight told me so. He said simply "Power comes from twisting your waist"

I agree with Anthony I teach my M A students the same way. But we keep our feet flat on the floor.

Wrong

Your right about the hips but if both of your feet are facing your opponent your more prone to get off balance if you miss a punch and your feet dont have enough ankle space to use footwork alsoyour feet have to be slightly diagnal so that your body naturaly twist and will be turned around to give less space for your opponent to throw a punch at your body

With the Jab
by: Anonymous

If you step off with your rear foot when throwing the jab, you will find the hip twist to be more natural. For example, if your stance is orthodox and you are throwing a left jab - it would be initiated by your right leg pushing off or stepping off as they say. The twist action of the body wherein you turn your left hip will occur easily as part of the jab sequence just before your fist slams into the target. Try it this way rather then stepping forward with your left foot (as many of us have been wrongly taught). The left foot will go forward, of course, but only naturally since the who jab movement began with your rear leg in the first place.
